Reducing rejected loads with real-time aggregate QC

A rejected load is one of the most expensive things a ready-mix plant produces: the material, the truck time, the return trip, the rework, and the customer relationship, all for concrete that never gets placed. Most of those rejects trace back to something upstream that no one saw coming. Better, faster aggregate QC is how you see it coming.

The real cost of a bad load

A single rejected or reworked load isn't just wasted material. It's a truck out of rotation, a delayed pour, a scramble to rebatch, and a dent in trust with the crew waiting on site. The cost multiplies well beyond the mix ticket, and it's the kind of loss that rarely shows up cleanly in a report, so it's easy to under-count.

Why aggregate issues go undetected

One main cause is aggregate variability. This can be from change in gradation, shape, texture, cleanliness or moisture. These properties can drift out of the desired range for the concrete mix. With traditional QC, that drift is invisible until it's too late:

  • Sieve tests run too infrequently to catch a pile changing between samples.
  • Shape and texture changes aren't measured by sieving at all.
  • By the time a strength, workability or placement problem surfaces, the load has already shipped.

Changing the decision loop
