How ASTM C494 admixture qualification works
ASTM C494 Types A–G explained: what the tests measure, what third-party qualification proves, and why it de-risks adopting a new admixture like ΔC.

Adopting a new admixture is a risk decision. Before a producer adds something new into thousands of cubic metres of concrete, or a specifier writes it into a project, they need confidence that it behaves predictably and meets recognized performance requirements. In North America, that confidence is anchored by a single standard: ASTM C494.
What ASTM C494 covers
ASTM C494/C494M is the Standard Specification for Chemical Admixtures for Concrete. It defines performance requirements an admixture must meet and sorts them into types by function:
- Type A: Water-reducing
- Type B: Retarding
- Type C: Accelerating
- Type D: Water-reducing and retarding
- Type E: Water-reducing and accelerating
- Type F: Water-reducing, high range
- Type G: Water-reducing, high range, and retarding
The key idea: C494 is performance-based. It doesn't dictate what the admixture is made of; it defines how the treated concrete must behave relative to a control mix.
What the tests actually measure
Qualification compares an admixture-treated mix against a reference (control) mix and checks that it meets requirements across both fresh and hardened properties, including:
- Water reduction: how much mixing water the admixture allows you to remove at equal workability.
- Setting time: the acceptable window relative to control, so the admixture doesn't disrupt finishing or schedule.
- Compressive strength: at multiple ages (typically 1, 3, 7, 28, 90 and 180 days), each with a minimum percentage of the control strength.
- Flexural strength, length change, and durability-related checks depending on type.
Because the requirements are pinned to a control, passing means the admixture delivers its function without quietly trading away another property.
What third-party qualification proves
Running these tests in-house is useful, but a third-party laboratory result is what carries weight in a spec file. It proves three things:
- The admixture meets the C494 performance requirements for its declared type.
- The results were produced by an independent lab following the standard's procedures.
- The behaviour is repeatable, not a one-off favorable batch.
Where ΔC lands
ΔC completed third-party testing and exceeded all compliance targets for both ASTM C494 Type A and Type F. In practice that means it qualifies both as a conventional water reducer (Type A, at a 4% dose of ΔC solids) and as a high-range water reducer (Type F, at a 6% dose), while also permanently storing biogenic carbon in the concrete.
The compressive-strength picture is the headline: across every test age, ΔC-treated mixes came in well above the C494 requirement, rather than just clearing the bar.

ΔC is a liquid biochar admixture qualified to ASTM C494 Types A and F — so it can be specified and dosed with the same confidence as any conventional admixture, while adding carbon storage the others don't.
Why this de-risks adoption
For a producer, C494 qualification means ΔC slots into existing quality systems and spec language you already use. For a specifier, it means you can request a lower-carbon mix without inventing a bespoke acceptance process. The standard does the de-risking for you.
